The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, had express fear considering the economy situation in the country couple in the rise of dollar, if Nigerians fails to start producing rice, by December a bag of rice could be sold for N40,000.
He said Nigeria spends about $22bn yearly on the inportation of food into the country. we know how many more dollars they bought and that is why we see the price of rice going up.`Adding that continuous importation of food will endanger the economy.
He added the price of rice was N12,000 few months ago, but today is N26,000 and if we don't start production by december someone who earns N40,000 may not be able to buy rice. A projection shows that by 2050 Nigeria's population will be 450 million, wondering what would happen then if the people could not feed themselves now.
The federal government has four farms in the states in our records. The average land you see in Baylesa can grow rice, so the colonial master were not wrong in their assessment when they said Niger Delta can not only feed Nigeria but west Africa.Rice matures in three months, states in Niger delta particularly bayelsa people are yet to give priority to agriculture the way the North-West sates like Kebbi, jigawa, Kano, Lagos, Ebony and Anambra prioritised it. he urge the people of Baylesa to take advantage of their land
