The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has yesterday
disclosed plans to introduce electronic device that will help with the
management and tracking of pilgrims wherever they are during
pilgrimage.
The Chief Executive Officer, Alh Abdulahi Mohammed, disclosed this at a
public hearing organised by the House of Representatives to investigate
the role of NAHCON in the operations of Hajj and Umrah.
The hearing was geared towards examining the causes and effects of the
2015 stampede at Minna in Saudi Arabia and how to avoid future
occurrence.
The NAHCON boss explained that the electronic device would provide
effective monitoring of the movement of Nigerian pilgrims during their
pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
He said that if there was an electronic tracking device during the
incidences in Saudi Arabia, the challenges encountered in identifying
the victims would have been averted.
He told the adhoc committee that two major tragedies occurred during
the 2015 Hajj operations where it was difficult to identify Nigerian
victims.
Abdulahi Mohammed disclosed that the crane crash that occurred on
September 11, 2015 left six Nigerians dead and six injured.
On the other hand the stampede that occurred about 10:30 a.m. on September 24, 2015 claimed the lives of over 300 Nigerians.
