There was palpable fear and tension as people scampered for safety yesterday when a passenger train rammed into a Toyota Hilux van belonging to the Nigerian Police at Woji community in Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State.
According source the incident occurred at the Rumurolu-Woji Raliway Line, even as many persons were said to had been injured, but no life was however lost in the train mishap.
An eyewitness, who pleaded for anonymity, claimed that the Toyota Hilux van, obstructed the way of passage for the passenger train, which was coming from Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Rivers State, Omoni Nnamdi, confirmed the incident, but said only two persons were injured, adding that the obstructing van did not belong to the police but a property of a company based in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Nnamdi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said, “Two persons were injured in the accident and are currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.
“The traffic gridlock caused by the accident between the train and the hilux van has been cleared and, as we speak, there is free flow of traffic and people are going about their lawful business.
“The command is on top of the situation and we promise to make the state suitable for all to live in.”
